Origin and Distribution of Effective Potato Cultivation
Potato cultivation is one of the most important vegetable farming practices in the world.
- The probable center of origin of potato is South America in the Central Andean Region.
- It was introduced into Europe, independently first in Spain in 1570 and then into England in 1590. In late 18th and 19th centuries, potato cultivation was extended to Central and Eastern Europe.
- Potato cultivation was introduced in India from Europe in the early 16th or 17th century by Portuguese.
- Cultivation of potato first began in Nilgiri hills in 1882.
- Potato is grown in all most all states of India except Kerala.
- About 82% of the area under the potato crop lies in the plains where the crop is grown during the short days of winter from October – March.
- About 10% area lies in the hills where the crop is grown during the long days of summer from April- September.

Effective Potato Nutritive Value
- Potassium is an essential mineral and electrolyte required for normal body function.
- Potato starch Farina, is used in textile industries.
- Glycoalkaloid present in potato is known as Solanin (5mg/100g).
- Adults requires about 3,500-4,700 mg/day ( varies by age, sex and health guidence).
- Regulates blood pressure.
- Potato aida protein synthesis and carbohydrate metabolism.
Uses and Importance of Potato
- Potato is consumed as a staple food in boiled, baked, fried, mashed and roasted forms.
- Rich in carbohydrates, vitamin C, vitamin B6, potassium and dietary fiber.
- Produces high yield per unit area and matures quickly ( about 90-120 days).
- Plays a vital role in food and nutrition security.
- Lysine content of potato complements cereal- based diet.
- 2008 was celebrated as International year of potato.
- It is included in the multilateral system established under FAO’s International treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. Home | International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture | FAO

Climate
- It is a crop of temperate region and can tolerate moderate frost, can be grown up to an altitude of 3000 meters above sea level.
- Temperature requrement:
- Optimum temperature for vegetative growth: 20-25 ºC
- Optimum temperature for tuber formation: 15-20 ºC
- Temperature above 30 ºC reduce the tuber formation and yield.
- Rainfall: About 500-700 mm, well distributed during the growing season. Excess rainfall and waterlogging are harmful.
- Moderate humidity about 60-80% is favourable.
- Young plants are sensitive to frost; severe frost can damage the foliage and reduce the yield.
- Grows best in well drained, fertile sandy loam to loam soils with a pH of 5.0-6.5.
Soil
- Potato cultivation can be done on a wide range of soils ranging from sandy loam, silt loam, loam, and clay soil.
- A pH between 5.5-8.0 is optimum.
- Soil should be fine textured, well drained, loose and without hard pans that hinders root penetration and tuberization.
- Deep Alluvial soils of Indo-Gangetic plains with almost neutral soil reaction are most suitable.
- Saline, alkaline and sodic soils are not fit for potato cultivation and production.
Seed Rate
The requirement for a hectare based on seed size are given below:
- Large size : 25-30 q/ha
- Medium size: 15-20 q/ha
- Small size : 10-15 q/ha
